Hey there, I just took the plunge and moved to a new city!
Moving to a new city can be super exciting, but it can also be pretty nerve-wracking, especially if you're looking to make new friends and find your tribe. But don't stress, because with the right attitude and approach, you can find a community in no time.
First up, do your research. Google local yoga studios, events, and workshops in your area. Follow these places on social media and stay in the loop with what's happening in your community.
Be brave and try new things. Attend a yoga class at a studio you've never been to before (and bring your Good Vibes Only towel for good luck), chat with your neighbors (invite them on walks!) or classmates, and don't be afraid to ask for recommendations on other events and cool spots to check out in the area. I realized you have to get over the fear of looking stupid! I was calling streets by the wrong names and couldn't even fully describe where I lived at first. Who cares!
I took the plunge yesterday and went to a party where I only knew ONE person and to be fair, we only met once. That was one of the best decisions of my life, seriously! I learned so much about the city and met amazing people but most of all, I realized, it's just not that serious and we can't talk ourselves out of new experiences because they're scary.
Social media can be a great tool to meet new people too. Join Facebook groups, follow accounts with similar interests, and attend virtual events hosted by local organizations. Instagram is also an awesome platform to connect with fellow yogis by using relevant hashtags and commenting on posts you vibe with. TikTok is wonderful to find new restaurants!
Volunteering is another sweet way to meet new people while giving back to your community. Look for local charities or organizations that match your values and see if they have any volunteer opportunities. This is also a great way to make some genuine connections with like-minded individuals.
And last but not least, remember to take care of yourself! Moving to a new city and meeting new people can be overwhelming, so make sure you're looking out for number one. Take a yoga class, join a sports group (hellluuuuur pickle ball, were' looking at you!) meditate, and don't be afraid to take a break when you need it.
In conclusion, moving to a new city and finding a community can be an exciting adventure. By doing your research, trying new things, using social media, volunteering, and practicing self-care, you'll meet new people and feel at home in no time. Keep an open mind and heart, and enjoy the journey! It's truly the best part.
